At first sight there is nothing green about the recently erected hotel in the heart of Copenhagen. Yet, the blank facades have integrated panels and TripleLynx inverters that make the Crowne Plaza hotel the first energy efficient hotel in Denmark and one of the first of its kind in the World. High quality, social and environmental awareness were key elements in creating the Crowne Plaza, Copenhagen Towers, located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Thisted: Almost 100 % sustainable energy sources

The municipality of Thisted in Northwest Jutland uses less than 1% fossil fuels in its production of energy and heat. With twenty years of experience with renewable energy sources, the municipality's energy and heat consumption today is almost exclusively derived from renewable energy sources such as the wind and the sun, biogas, geothermal plant, incineration of biomass and residual heat from industry. The various renewable energy sources provide 100% of electricity supplies and 85% of heat in the municipality.

Dongtan: The world’s first large-scale eco-city?

In 2005, the Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) hired the consultancy Arup to design a city which would exclusively use sustainable energy, be self-sufficient and reduce energy consumption by 66% in relation to its neighbour Shanghai. The plan is for Dongtan to house 500,000 people from rural areas.

The city of Rizhao combines incentives and legislative tools to encourage the large-scale, efficient use of renewable energy, especially solar energy. 99% of Rizhao’s households use solar water heaters. In the suburbs and villages, more than 30 percent of households use solar water heaters, and over 6,000 households have solar cooking facilities. Almost all traffic lights, street lights and park illuminations are powered by photovoltaic solar cells.

Inhabitants in Abu Dhabi are usually consuming an extreme amount of energy on air-condition systems due to the hot summers where the temperature goes up to 40 degrees Celsius. Demand for gas rises by 35 per cent in the summer, when air conditioning reaches peak consumption.
