Perth: Beating urban sprawl

Perth is the largest city in Western Australia with a population around 1,5 MIO inhabitants. It is currently the fastest growing region in Australia with 10% growth a year. Western Australia has acknowledged that in order to stop urban sprawl, and pursue a sustainable future, a large plan covering the whole county is necessary. To prevent urban sprawl the planners of Perth have formulated a strategy for a more sustainable future, covering the areas the sprawled everyday life is dependent on.

Lyon: An overall vision for transport - Urban Mobility Master Plan

In 1997, Greater Lyon adopted an Urban Mobility Master Plan. The objective of the plan was to re-harmonise the distribution of means of travel, to create conditions for a pleasant town containing solidarity and thereby, in turn, favour sustainable mobility. The project for Lyon and its suburbs, and the Mandate Plan – defining the major policy orientations for Greater Lyon up until 2007 – had a budget of 788 million Euros for investments in transport.

Bogotá: More bikes and buses, fewer cars

In Bogotá more than 300 km of bicycle lanes, stretching from the slum areas and suburbs into the capital centre been, have been built. The bicycle lanes are an ongoing project under concurrent development. Since the construction of the lanes, bicycle use has increased by 5 times in the city. It is estimated that there are between 300,000 and 400,000 trips made daily in Bogotá by bicycle. A large portion of these rides are in the southern, poorer areas.
