Lidköping: Biogas – A Joint Venture

The development of biomethane production in the City of Lidköping was initiated in 1990, and in autumn 2011 the plant at the Kartåsen refuse treatment plant will operate with full capacity. It is one of the first of its kind in the world producing both compressed and liquid biomethane for vehicles. The production will be sufficient to cover the consumption of 6,000 cars driving 17,000 km annually.

The project was implemented in the period from 2007 to 2010. Based on a mapping of the island’s energy consumption, a strategy was adopted including the following prioritised actions:

Albertslund: Energy efficient renovation of homes

The project targets houses built during the period 1960-1980. All buildings under the project are prefabricated.

Porvoo: Energy-efficient Residential Area

The aim is to develop an energy-efficient residential area, to integrate the aspect of energy efficiency in all phases of spatial planning, to create new solutions and new ways of working, and to steer and monitor the use of energy. The findings of this pilot project are intended to be applied on a larger scale elsewhere in Finland.

Lahti: CHP-plant using solid recovered fuel

The novelty of the project is in the technically advanced gas purifi cation process and energy efficiency of the gasification process. The full-scale use of the new power plant will reduce some 40 % of the amount of coal used in the old power plant, which will now be substituted. The concept combining the efficient waste sorting of Lahti area with large scale energy production in CHP plant shows were the ambitiousness in municipal energy production can lead into. The owner of the new power plant is the city-owned Lahti Energy Ltd.

Drammen: Marienlyst School and the local heating network

The heating source for the building is a self-owned local heating network based on heat pumps from two large skating rinks. In addition to supplying Marienlyst School, the heating network – which has a maximum output of about 4.4 MW – heats all the sporting facilities in the Marienlyst area, including Norway’s largest swimming pool stadium, sports arenas, offices, undersoil heating for football pitches, street heating, a large nursing home and, soon to come, another primary school.

Jomala: District Heating and Biogas

In 2005-2010 a project was carried out to replace many old boilers in individual buildings by building a local district heating network. Simultaneously the dairy built a gasification plant to utilize its process waste in gas production. In 2010 the district heating system, operated by the municipalityowned company Jomala Energi Ab, was in operation. The main byproduct utilized in the gasification is whey. The gas is fed to the district heating boiler and also used for heating in the dairy process.

The project coordinates energy and climate actions of the various departments of the city and initiates cooperation projects with business partners, universities, research institutes and civil society organizations. ECO2 is the most extensive project of this kind in Finland and shows a good example of tackling the energy and climate issues in a cross-sectoral way. Participation in national and international networks is utilized in the exchange of good practices.

Växjö: SESAC – Sustainable Energy Systems in Advanced Cities

The specific goals are the following:

Energy use of the new eco-buildings to be 33 % lower than required in the applicable building code
Local energy production to be increased by 8,822,000 kWh
CO2-emissions to be reduced by 20 %
Capacity building of the municipal housing companies to be realized in the field of energy efficiency
Green growth to be stimulated in Växjö and in the region.

Vestmannaeyjar: The sustainable development

The project is a joint effort between the University of Iceland, the National Energy Agency, the Innovation Centre in Vestmannaeyjar, local authorities and the biggest industries. A two-year subproject with using and testing smart meters in 30-40 houses and small businesses is carried out in cooperation between researchers from Iceland, Ireland, Scotland and Finland.

Sunndal: Urban development in a climate perspective
