50 online resources for eco-friendly schools

Sustainable development is seeking to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations. Therefore we must learn and educate our way out of current social and environmental problems and learn to live sustainably. Education and specialization are crucial parameters for sustainable urban development; economically, socially, and environmentally. The world is closely connected through cooperative partnerships and cities share many of the same challenges in relation to climate adaption and sustainable development. Thus it makes sense that everyone gain access to this knowledge.

Education for sustainable development aims to help people and scholars in all ages to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to make informed decisions for the benefit of themselves and others, and to act upon these decisions. Since 1992 the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), for which UNESCO is the lead agency, has been seeking to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning in the private and public sector in order to address the social, economic, cultural and environmental problems we face in the 21st century.

Besides education, schools have been known to waste energy, food, water and paper on a daily basis. Thanks to the ongoing green movement, multiple schools around the world today understand their impact on the environment and the society at large, and how it can be improved in regard to consumption, waste, and education as such. Any school and educational institution can transform into an eco-friendly environment while improving its own role as an ‘eco-educator’ and developer of a new ‘eco-generation’. Here are 50 online resources for eco-friendly school, eco-educators, and eco-students. These environmental news sites and blogs will keep students and educators up to date on sustainability, energy efficiency and other environmental issues affecting schools.
