Rethinking suburbia

The outskirts of the city - the suburb - is the theme of this year’s World Architecture Day in Denmark on Friday 1. October, 2010. Sustainable Cities and DAC are pleased to inform you about three events presenting three perspectives on the suburb, the suburbian landscape, its potentials and lack of same.

The organization Gate 21 is hosting an event on ’Future low-energy housing.’ Forest & Landscape, University of Copenhagen in collaboration with the society of Danish landscapearchitects are giving a talk entitled ‘The landscape of the suburb’. The consulting firm House of Heritage Ltd. (Bygningsarv) is hosting an evening debate on suburbia as heritage.

1.
Gate 21 is a non-profit organization aiming to demonstrate and generate initiatives on low-energy housing, energy renovation and efficient transport systems in Eastern Denmark through collaborations, networks and formal partnerships between politicians, private enterprises, and scholars in the field of climate, architecture, transportation, and environmental planning.

On Friday from 2-4 pm three guest speakers will be presenting their different views on and visions for ‘Future low-energy suburbs.’ Head of Gate 21 Jacob Lundgaard and Architect at Velux Torben Thyregod will be talking about the organization and the way in which Gate 21 is working due to facilitate interdisciplinary partnerships and networks between officiels, private investors and academics. One of the main themes of this particular event is retrofitting and energy renovation of one-family houses from the 60s located in the outskirts of the city, formally known as the suburb. Head of the Agenda Center in Albertslund, Povl Markussen, will be presenting the rencently renovated Energy +House 'Hyldespjældet', which is located near the head office block of Gate 21.

Gate 21, Friday, 1. October, 2-3.30 pm, Vognporten 2, 2620 Albertslund
Registration is required. Register here.

2.
Forest & Landscape, University of Copenhagen, and the society of Danish landscapearchitects are hosting a talk on the landscape of the suburbs and the way in which landscapearchitecture and urban planning two overlapping fields.
The goal is to highlight the characteristics and potentials of the suburbs. What is unique about the suburb? Why do we want to live there? And how can we generate a sustainable future socially, environmentally, and economically for the suburbs. Some of these questions might be answered on Friday.

Forest & Landscape, Friday at 4-5 pm, Rolighedsvej 23, Frederiksberg, Copenhagen
Registration is not necessary.

3.
Attend the evening debate where House of Heritage Ltd. asks the question: Should we preserve the suburb? Among the invited guestspeakers are the poet Søren Ulrik Thomsen and Head of the Suburb Museum (Forstadsmuseum) Poul Sverrild.
Enjoy an evening of suburbia and debate on the life of the suburbs. The barbecue is lit and the drinks rightly served in front of the shiny caravan - everyone is welcome to join this unique event of true suburban vibrations.

House of Heritage Ltd, 1. October, 6-22 pm, (Bygningskulturens Hus), Borgergade 111, København
The event is free. Contact Bjørn Henrichsen for registration.

The build environment of the suburbs is turning fifty years old and the structures are slowly declining. However, even though the Danish suburb is transforming into heritage we might reflect upon its qualities and its impact on the environment and the landscape at large. In order to regain its old statues and lost territory, The Danish Suburb must face a massive revitalization and transformation. The process of reconstructing the suburb is demanding and expensive - some essential questions must be asked before the reconstruction begins: What is worth (not worth) reconstructing? What is worth designating as national heritage? And how can we make the suburbs sustain socially, economically, and environmentally today and into the future?
